i lost my ring last night...a ring that had more sentimental value than i really even thought...for as long as i had that ring i never took it off...and i mean never, so how could it just slip off my finger...

i am actually really sad about this....and i feel kind of ridiculous about it, but it really meant alot to me...i had it 6 years...

my mom tried to console me and said that whoever took it probably needed it more than i did....but to me it had massive amounts of representation...it was a symbol to me and kind of a good luck charm if you beleive in that kind of thing...

i never felt materialistic until now....

I WANT SOME WINE WITH MY CHEESE....
iwas outside smoking today up at school and I saw a couple walking…they stopped and the guy simply turned to the girl, cupped her face, and kissed her. It was so simple and yet so beautiful. I felt a little obscene stealing a piece of their moment…even if it was just a glance, but it made me want something I haven’t wanted in a while.

situation:

the professor that i had been working with[verderber] over this last semester said that the client really wanted me to stay on the project after i graduated...but said that i would only be able to get a minimum amount of money meaning that i would have to move AGAIN back to dfw for the rest of my job search...

i told verderber my financial situation and he said that he would be more than happy to speak to the client on my behalf to negotiate for more money.

i get a phone call on friday from the client[new orleans mission] offering me 3200 for 2 months of work on LEED and a free place to stay at the New Orleans Womens Shelter.....[i was shocked] and when my voice finally found me i thanked them for the free offer of a place to stay but i had already signed a lease...and that i would discuss the amount that they would pay me on tuesday after our standard meeting at 10am....

for the last couple of days i've been stressing: in the next week depending on the outcome of the tuesday discussion i would have a little over a week to pack all my stuff in new orleans, say my goodbyes and move back to dallas....if they didn't offer to pay me enough...

resolution:

when i met with the client today after the tuesday meeting...he said that he understood my financial situation and would be willing to pay me whatever amount that would keep me in new orleans[for 2 months] to continue on the project....
and he was VERY open to discuss with me what i would need!!!

so i'm thinking that the professor i was working with was thinking more for the project than for what would actually help me...

but all is cleared now:
i have enough time to work on my portfolio
i have enough time to be able to move into my sublet for the semester
i have enough time to go home and visit my family and friends for more than 6 hours[that's how much time i had with them during graduation]

life is good so far!!

it's midnight on a saturday. i'm hosting my own dance party[cause i was dancin by myself] in the computer lab while working on my portfolio....yes i am that lame.

Random Tangent # 35 : port-folie-o[say it out loud...you'll get it]

i remember that i spent alot of time on my last portfolio....but then again i had 10 pages to show 5 projects WITH process & text. i carefully designed the pages to flow from one idea to the next, and i remember meticulously placing & resizing images, checking the font, location, etc of the text...it was a carefully orchestrated project in itself with some pages taking hours...though OVERWHELMING in the end with the amount of information squeezed onto each page....i felt the pride of an author just hitting the jackpot with an internationally published book made into a movie starring Tom Hanks....

2 years and a thesis project later:
WHITE IS THE COLOR OF THE DAY!!!!
no text, no problem!!
2 lines and a bracket take you from one idea to the next
that image doesn't really need to be resized...KEEP IT BIG!!!
hey, rem was all about the bigness!!
[follow the trail of thought from here]

we'll just see how this thing turns out.

i need to get over the senioritis...i've already graduated...

ENTERING THE REAL WORLD :: PREAMBLE

i actually graduated on May 13th from Tulane University....and yet it really didn't hit me that i am no longer a student until just the other day honestly... i'm in the computer lab at Tulane and a girl asks me if i'm in the lagniappe semester...i said no....she asked if i was going to be in summer school....i said no that i had graduated..
AND YET I CAN NOT PULL MYSELF FROM THE ARCHITECTURE BUILDING!!!
but part of that reason is that my laptop shuts down randomly b/c it needs a new fan, my laptop can't handle the gigantic files that i've rocked out for thesis....etc.

so now i'm continuing the independent study into a job with Prof Verderber....and working on my portfolio, resume, and doing firm research....

Marketscape :: Dynamic Urban [re]Generation

Dynamic systems in relation to architecture have mainly been utilized in an architectural sense to generate continuous and curvilinear form. The intention of this proposal is to utilize the same algorithmic, self-organizing strategy to generate the organizational zoning and formatting of a project.
As this project is set in New Orleans, the dynamic system that was chosen was the natural process of a forest ecosystem rebuilding itself after a forest fire. Through research and understanding of this process six main concepts were chosen to lay out the rules for the project as a whole.

6 conceptual guidelines based on the regeneration of an ecosystem:
bio-legacies:
zoning & formatting of the site as a whole is based on the state of the urban landscape
seeding: initial insertions are deliberate but over time become more random & uncontrolled
adaptation: new groupings must react to the existing groupings of stalls and the permanent pod spaces
variable regeneration levels & speeds: variable complexity of the systems based on the programmatic needs of the retail
biodiversity & mutual aid: competing systems interconnect and grow together over time
dormant rendered activated: as the site builds up with activity & program, pods and groupings of pods maintain the open space

These conceptual models come to formulate the rules of not only the systems themselves but the progress of the project as well. The project is developed at three levels simultaneously and each although existing at different scales with separate rules, interacts with the other levels of design. This interaction of systems across scales allows for the market to adapt fully to the needs of the residents of the Treme’ area and those of the city.
The rules act as extents of a type of gaming strategy in which as an alteration is made at one level of design, the other levels react and respond with their own alterations.

[in]Stall
At the [in]stall level, the materials used for the stall parts are hollow aluminum supports, threaded rods and nuts, and varia, an innovative material that is lightweight durable, and able to support the level of use that market. The rules for the stall parts themselves are that the aluminum can only be used in a support use. The Varia is only used for horizontal, shelving means. Each of the pieces, except for the Varia, can be easily replaced by visiting a local hardware store. Each stall can be constructed and broken down by two people, and each stall recieves a screen to mark out part of their space and for advertising. The stall compartment consists of a parking space: 10’ x 18’
-[in]stall types:
these stall types are generic prototypical stall pieces yet tailored to the needs of the basic genre of the goods that are sold. the [in]stall parts of each genre can be mixed and matched to create any combination of retail. [in]stalls designed based upon the sectional quality of a forest ecosystem and are designed to accentuate the understanding of the sectional quality of the market and the heights required for storage, display and advertising.
“clothing”—stall mainly intended for hanging clothes/accessories, and displayand limited storage
“vegetable”—stall mainly intended for vegetables/fruits, display and storage
“flea”—stall mainly intended for display, limited storage
“building”—stall mainly intended for storage, limited display
“pod”—a permanent structure intended to ensure open space within the market

Site Aperture
At the site level, there is an examination of the freeway structure itself, and the response to the sectional quality of the structure and the flows regarding each area of the freeway.
The site is diagrammed through the flows that occur there and the structure itself. The animation “site regen_1” illustrates the alteration of the site from pre-Katrina habitation through the flooding that occurred on the site through the patterns of rehabitation. The flows that occurred within the site post-Katrina were dictated by the use of the site as a place for the city to tow the abandoned vehicles around the city. Through the second animations, “mid 2” and “mid 4” there is an investigation for how the various levels of the freeway, the parking lot underneath, and the intersection itself could interact and react to each other. The [in]stalls act as instillation architecture within the site.

Rules for [re]Generation:
1] when the site gains 21 stalls of any combination a pod is inserted
2] a pod is an open space that is permanent once added to the site
3] new [in]stalls added to the site must conform to the pod spaces and other stalls
4] none of the triple spaced [in]stall combinations can be achieved until the first14 combinations are achieved
5] a triple stall combination is the maximum [in]stall space allowed within the site

The designed infrastructure of water, electrical and advertising levers and cables are meant to allow the market stall configurations to organize themselves with ease of accessiblity to their supplementary needs.

Urban Landscape
At the urban level there is an understanding that the urban fabric of the area is altered by the market that will be placed there. The diagrams and animation “urban regen_1” illustrate the changes of habitation of the urban context from pre-Katrina, through the flooding, and rehabitation of the area post-Katrina. The animation “model 3” illustrates the flows that were graphed as occuring within the urban context. These flows represent flows of people, information, and goods and services. Through these understanding of the flows at the urban level the market is seen to regenerate not only the freeway, but the surrounding neighborhoods, and even the larger urban context. The final timeline is a resultant of this cumulation of this research and design. The timeline illustrates this regeneration over to almost 7 years, and is a prediction of the urban reaction.

MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING

my birthday was pretty relaxing....although i didn't go out and "party" i spent my birthday relaxing which was EXACTLY what i needed....
worked on a paper for a bit, took a great walk in audobon park to relax(2miles of beautiful oak trees and stately homes at dusk....beautiful.) and then when i finished the paper i went home read a book while soaking in a hot tub...got out put on my most COMFORTABLE pajamas....drank some wine and had a drink over the phone with my friend john...FABULOUSLY RELAXING DAY!!! and considering the fact that i'm graduating on May 13th is the BEST gift i can give myself beyond a personal assistant and an on-call massuse...

to finalize things we have to put all of our images from our thesis boards into 11 x 17 printed form for a document due on Wednesday of this week....

SO WHY DO YOU CARE?? i hear you ask....BECAUSE I'M ABOUT TO POST ALL [and yes i mean ALL] of my thesis board on this blog...EXPLAINATION INCLUDED!!!

THAT'S right folks....submited for your approval...shiny pretty pictures of what i've done for the last 4 months in small easy to swallow packages ready for your consumption...

this is the board has made people YELL, Gasp in reaction, and ooh and aaahhh over the supplementary animations...

Please take a look...and if you feel so inclined please feel free to give me some feedback on anything: process, images, text, clarity of the project, clarity of the text, etc.
